From La Plata, Argentina to Chicago: An Artist Shaped by Color and Nature
Born in La Plata, Argentina, Gaby Silva Bavio's earliest memories are filled with vivid colors, rich textures, and the layered surfaces of the natural world.
The shifting reflections of water, delicate movements of plants and animals, and changing textures found throughout nature made a lasting impression on her from an early age. Painting and drawing became natural ways for Gaby to understand and celebrate the world around her.
Her family also played an important role in nurturing her creative path. With artistic traditions rooted in her grandmother's lineage and early lessons from Argentine artists, Gaby grew up in an environment that encouraged curiosity and artistic expression.
At the age of 24, Gaby left Argentina and moved to the United States, bringing with her a deep connection to the South American landscapes that had shaped her earliest visual experiences.
After arriving in Chicago, she continued developing her artistic voice at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Immersed in an international and creatively diverse community, Gaby refined the bold, expressive, gestural approach to painting that defines her work today.
Paintings That Exist Between Abstraction and Impressionism
Gaby Silva Bavio's paintings occupy an exciting space between abstraction and impressionism.
Her work is not strictly representational, yet it remains deeply connected to recognizable experiences in nature. A painting may suggest the reflection of light on water, the dense ecosystem of a pond, the movement of a river, or the energy of plant life without attempting to recreate these subjects literally.
Instead, Gaby captures something more experiential: the feeling of being surrounded by color, movement, light, and texture.
Her paintings are built through thick layers of oil paint and unexpected surfaces. Depending on the needs of a particular piece, she may use brushes, palette knives, her fingers, or even marble dust to create richly tactile compositions.
The result is work that encourages viewers to experience painting not only visually but almost physically. Layers emerge, disappear, and interact with one another, creating surfaces that shift as the viewer moves and spends time with the work.
An Intuitive and Expressive Creative Process
Intuition plays a central role in Gaby's artistic process.
Rather than beginning with a rigid plan, each painting often starts with an initial color, sensation, or feeling. From there, the work develops through her interaction with the canvas.
Layers of vivid oil paint are added, altered, covered, scraped, and revealed. The painting evolves organically as Gaby responds to what is happening on the surface.
This spontaneous approach allows her work to retain a sense of movement and discovery. Her paintings feel alive because they are created through a process of continual observation and response.
The textures and layers within her work echo the natural environments that inspire her. Just as a landscape contains overlapping systems, changing light, hidden surfaces, and constant movement, Gaby's paintings develop through accumulation and transformation.
Influenced by Monet, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell
Gaby's work reflects a wide range of artistic influences, including Claude Monet, Cy Twombly, and Joan Mitchell.
Like Monet, she is fascinated by the changing relationship between light, color, and nature. Like Twombly and Mitchell, she embraces gesture, movement, and the expressive potential of paint itself.
Yet Gaby's paintings maintain a distinctive voice rooted in her own experiences and observations.
Nature remains her foremost muse.
She is drawn to the intricate rhythms of ponds, the gentle movement of rivers, reflections on water, and the complex ecosystems found within even the smallest natural environments. These subjects provide endless possibilities for exploring color, texture, movement, and abstraction.
Her paintings ask viewers to look beyond the obvious and recognize the extraordinary beauty contained within everyday natural experiences.
